Creating Sites for Education

Creating educational sites in general, and creating educational sites with Drupal in particular.

Note: The info about school sites is aimed primarily at K-12 schools. The discussion about class sites is most specifically aimed at grade levels 6-12, but can also apply to higher ed.

At the outset, I find it necessary to say that the information in this post is not, in all likelihood, earthshattering. This post is largely intended to provide a framework to discuss the range of sites for schools, and to avoid some pitfalls that limit the effectiveness of these sites. The scope of this initial post is limited to some of the technical details involved in creating web sites for educational institutions.

On Drupal and DrupalEd, there has been a fair amount of discussion concerning educational sites. However, the details regarding what to include for an "educational site" will vary depending on who you ask within any school. The principal will say one thing; a teacher another; a student something else. And, is it a web site for a public school? A school district? An independent school? What grade level?

This post aims to inject some detail into what can be a nebulous topic.
